The best grazing muzzles for your horse

Not all grazing muzzles are the same. And every horse is different from the other. In addition, not every grazing muzzle is suitable for every type of housing or feed management. It all sounds complicated, but there are two directions you can go.

  1. A strict grazing muzzle with high restriction.
  2. A mild grazer with a milder restriction.

1. A strict grazing muzzle with high restriction.

This type of grazing restriction gives an average reduction of ±70-80% on intake and is used as:

  • Your horse is really too fat and is at risk of health problems in the short or long term.
  • Recently had laminitis.
  • Has EMS or IR and is very sensitive to sugars.

Things to keep in mind:

  • You should wear a strict grazing muzzle for a maximum of 8-10 hours per day.
  • Not suitable for eating hay.

2. A mild grazer with a milder restriction.

This type of grazing restriction gives an average reduction of ±50-65% on intake and is used as:

  • Your horse is in the pasture 24/7 or has to wear the grazing muzzle 24/7. (Your horse must then be able to eat sufficiently.)
  • Hay also needs to be able to be eaten.
  • If you are looking for a milder restriction because your horse is healthy now but should not gain weight.
  • Your horse quickly overeats and quickly develops colic, but is otherwise healthy.

Things to keep in mind:

A mild grazing muzzle may not be effective enough for some horses, depending on their health and situation. The grazing muzzle you choose depends on your situation, but sometimes it may be that the situation is not suitable for your horse and that a grazing muzzle cannot be used to correct it. For example, if your horse is in the pasture 24/7 but is also on the verge of laminitis or urgently needs to lose weight. Therefore, do not only look at the grazing muzzle as a solution, but also look at other solutions in housing management.

Which grazing muzzles are suitable?

At the top of the page you can set the different filters so that you can see exactly which grazing muzzle is suitable for a severe or mild restriction. In addition, for each grazing muzzle in the tab 'choice aid' it is stated exactly what the grazing muzzle is suitable for.
